The Story

Instituted by Queen Elizabeth II, the 1990 Medal was awarded only during 1990 to 3,632 selected persons in recognition of the contribution they had made to some aspect of New Zealand life, especially the various 1990 celebrations.

The 1990 Medal (designed by the New Zealand Herald of Arms) was struck in bronze-gilt metal by the Royal Australian Mint. The reverse bears the official 1990 symbol, a kotuku, white heron, designed by Fred Graham and Roy Good. The 1990 Medal was accompanied by a certificate bearing the signatures of the Sovereign, Governor-General and Prime Minister.
