The Story

The Army LS&GC medal that recognised long service and good conduct was introduced in 1830, to be awarded to soldiers of irreproachable character who had served 21 years in the infantry or 20 years in the cavalry. After a number of design and title changes the medal became known as the LS&GCM (Military) in 1930 and the names of the colonies or dominions were shown on the suspender bar. In Australia it replaced the Permanent Forces of the Empire Beyond the Seas LS&GC Medal. It was awarded to soldiers who had completed 18 years of qualifying service and may have been awarded to officers who had completed at least 12 years service as a soldier.
